Product Hunt video size and format

Product Hunt does not host video files. Your launch video is a YouTube link that Product Hunt embeds in the gallery, so the format that matters is the one YouTube plays well. Export a 16:9 MP4 at 1920×1080 (1080p) with H.264 video and AAC audio, and YouTube will serve an HD version in the embed.

Product Hunt’s help center adds two rules: paste the full YouTube URL, because shortened links do not load, and do not set the video to private. Public or unlisted both work. Unlisted keeps the video off your channel page until launch day.

A vertical 9:16 video is not useful in the gallery, but it is the right shape for the X, LinkedIn and Instagram posts that drive traffic to your launch, so make both if you can.

Product Hunt gallery image size: 1270×760

Product Hunt recommends gallery images at 1270×760 pixels, and the gallery only appears once you have at least two images. Most launches use four to eight. The first images get the most attention, so lead with the clearest picture of your product and its main benefit.

Design each gallery image as a slide with one message: a headline of a few words and a real screenshot. Keep text large enough to read on a phone, and use the same screens and wording as your launch video so the gallery and video tell one story.

Product Hunt thumbnail size: 240×240

The thumbnail is the small square image next to your product name in the feed. Product Hunt recommends 240×240 pixels. An animated GIF is allowed if it is under 3 MB, and Product Hunt asks you to avoid strobing, quick cuts and text that is too small to read.

A simple logo works, but a short, calm loop of your product can stand out in a list of static icons. Export it at 240×240, keep it to a few seconds, and check the file size before you upload.

How to upload your Product Hunt video

  1. 1

    Export 16:9

1920×1080 MP4. Keep text away from the bottom edge, where YouTube’s player controls appear.

  2. 2

    Upload a day early

Public or unlisted, embedding allowed. Give YouTube time to process the HD version.

  3. 3

    Paste the full URL

Use the youtube.com/watch link, not a youtu.be short link or a playlist.

  4. 4

    Preview the launch

Check the video plays in your scheduled launch, then share a 9:16 cut when it goes live.

Common Product Hunt media mistakes

Most launch media problems are easy to avoid once you know them:

  • Using a youtu.be short link, which does not load in the gallery.
  • Leaving the YouTube video private, so it does not play on Product Hunt.
  • Opening the video with a long logo animation instead of the product.
  • Tiny text in gallery images that cannot be read on a phone.
  • A thumbnail GIF over 3 MB or with fast, flashing cuts.
  • Gallery images and video that show different screens or messages.

Make the Product Hunt video with Tweenova

Tweenova turns your launch brief and the screenshots from your gallery into a beat-synced 30–60 second launch video, in 16:9 for Product Hunt and 9:16 for social, from the same storyboard. You pick one of three storyboard directions, revise in plain words and download both formats, usually the same day. The video is built only from your real screenshots, with an original, license-free soundtrack you can publish on YouTube.
